IELTS Question: Family Friends and Relatives

Instructions for Conducting the Activity

  1. Divide students into pairs: Each student should have a learning partner for this activity.

  2. Distribute questions: Hand out or display a list of questions that will be used during the activity.

  3. Explain the process:

  • One student from each pair will start by reading the first question aloud.
  • Their partner will respond to the question in a way that they feel is suitable, providing a clear and thoughtful answer.
  • After the answer, switch roles so the other student asks the next question, and their partner responds.
  1. Encourage natural conversation: Remind students to listen carefully to their partner’s answers and ask follow-up questions if needed to encourage a more in-depth discussion.

  2. Monitor the activity: Walk around the room and observe the conversations. Offer guidance if students seem stuck or need help expanding their answers.

  3. Switch questions: After a few minutes, ask the pairs to move on to a new question from the list.

  4. Conclude the activity: Once all pairs have had enough time to practice, conclude the activity by discussing the questions and answers as a group.

Family, Relatives, and Friends

1. How often do you spend time with your family?

I try to spend time with my family as much as possible. We usually gather for dinner every evening, which gives us a chance to catch up on each other’s day. On weekends, we often do activities together, like watching movies or going for a walk. Even if I’m busy, I make sure to allocate some time during the week to connect with them. I believe maintaining close ties with family is important for emotional support and overall well-being.

2. What role do grandparents play in a family in your country?

In my country, grandparents play a significant role in families. They are often seen as the pillars of wisdom and experience, providing guidance and advice to younger generations. Many families also rely on grandparents to help raise children, as they often take on caregiving responsibilities while parents are at work. Additionally, they help preserve family traditions and pass on cultural values, which strengthens family bonds.

3. How do you maintain relationships with distant relatives?

Maintaining relationships with distant relatives can be challenging, but technology makes it easier. I stay in touch with them through phone calls, video chats, and messaging apps. Social media also helps me stay updated on their lives, even if we don’t talk regularly. On special occasions like holidays or birthdays, we make an extra effort to connect by sending greetings or gifts. Visiting them once in a while, if possible, also helps maintain those bonds.

4. What do you usually do when you meet your friends?

When I meet my friends, we usually go out for coffee or a meal and catch up on what’s been happening in our lives. We often spend time chatting about work, personal interests, or even our future plans. If we have more time, we might watch a movie, play sports, or go for a walk in the park. I think it’s important to engage in activities that help us bond and enjoy each other’s company.

5. How has technology influenced the way you stay in touch with family and friends?

Technology has greatly influenced how I stay in touch with family and friends. Messaging apps and social media make it easy to communicate instantly, even if we are miles apart. Video calls allow for more personal interactions, especially with relatives who live overseas. Social media also helps me keep track of their lives, even when we don’t talk often. Overall, technology has made staying connected much more convenient and efficient.

6. Do you think it’s important to have a big family? Why or why not?

I don’t think the size of the family matters as much as the quality of relationships within it. While having a big family can be beneficial in terms of support and companionship, a smaller family can be equally close-knit and loving. What’s more important is how well family members communicate and support each other, regardless of the size of the family.

7.How are family celebrations usually held in your country?

Family celebrations in my country are typically large gatherings that involve extended family members. For major events like weddings, religious holidays, or birthdays, we usually host a big meal where everyone comes together. Food plays an important role in these celebrations, and there’s often traditional music or activities. It’s a time for family members to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company in a festive atmosphere.

8. What qualities do you value most in your friends?

The qualities I value most in my friends are trustworthiness, honesty, and a good sense of humor. I believe that trust is the foundation of any strong friendship because it allows you to confide in each other without fear. Honesty is also important because it helps maintain transparency and prevents misunderstandings. Lastly, having a sense of humor makes the relationship more enjoyable, as it’s great to be able to laugh together and not take life too seriously.

9. Do you think it’s easier to make friends as a child or as an adult?

I think it’s easier to make friends as a child because children tend to be more open and less judgmental. They’re not as concerned with differences in background or opinions, so they can bond quickly over simple things like playing games. As adults, we tend to be more cautious and selective when making friends, often because we have more responsibilities and are more aware of differences. That said, meaningful friendships can still be formed at any age.

10. How do you support your family members when they face difficulties?

When my family members face difficulties, I try to support them by offering a listening ear and providing emotional comfort. Sometimes, just being there for them is enough to help them feel better. If possible, I also help them by offering practical solutions or assisting with any tasks that might be overwhelming. I believe that being supportive and understanding during tough times strengthens family bonds and helps us overcome challenges together.
