Direct and Indirect Narration Optative Sentence.

We change an Optative Sentence from Direct speech to Indirect Speech according to the following rules-

In the Optative Sentence, we change Reporting Verb into Wished, Cursed, Prayed, etc according to the Sentence of the Reported Speech.

If there is Greeting [Good Wish] in the Reported Speech we change the Reporting Verb [Said] into Wished.

Example:- He said to his friend,”May you live long !”

                  He wished his friend that he might live long.

If there is a Curse in the Reported Speech we change the Reporting Verb [Said] into Cursed.

Example:- They said to their enemies,”May you go to hell.

                 They cursed their enemies that they might go to hell.

If there is Pray in the Reported Speech or word God is used we change the Reporting Verb [Said] into Prayed.

Example:- My friend said to me,”May God help you.”

                 My friend prayed that God might help me.

When we use Prayed we remove the Object of the Reporting Speech.

If there is Goodbye or Good Night in the Reported Speech we change the Reporting Verb [Said] into Bade.

Examples:-

  1.  He said,”Good night my brother !”
  •  He bade his brother good night.
  1. She said,”Goodbye my friends !”
  • He bade goodbye to his friends.

If there is Good Morning in the Reported Speech we change the Reporting Verb [Said] into Wished.

Example:- I said to my teacher,”Good morning.”

                  I wished my teacher good morning.

  • When there is Good Morning,Good Night,Goodbye etc,we do not use Conjunction.

 After changing the Reporting Verb according to the Reported  Speech we use Conjunction That and make the sentence Assertive.And remove the Interjection Mark.

Example:- He said to his friend,”May you live long !

                  He wished his friend that he might live long.

  2. The child said,”Good night,Dad !”
  3. I said to my friend,”May you live long !”
  4. The hermit said to him,”May you go to hell !”
  5. His friends said to him,”Good morning !”
  6. They said,”Long live our Prime Minister !”
  7. Ravi said to Mohan,”Many happy returns of the day !”
  8. My brother said to me,”May you have a happy journey !”
  9. The old man said to Shayam,”May you be ruined !”
  10. The girl said to her friends,”Good night !”
  11. My mother said to me,”May you succeed in your examination !”
  12. The man said to his sons,”May you lead a happy life !”
  13. The woman said to her,”May God bless you with a lovely daughter !”
  14. The students said to the teacher,”Good morning !”
  15. The hermit said to us,”May you prosper in your ventur !”
  16. He said to his son,”May you succeed in all your exams !”
  17. The poor man said to our friends,”May you always be happy !”
  18. They said to their friends,”Goodbye !”
  19. I said to my brother at the railway station,”May you have a happy journey !”
  20. I said,”Goodbye my friends !”
