DIRECT AND INDIRECT NARRATION EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES.
We change Exclamatory Sentence into Indirect Speech by applying the following rules-
- We change the Reporting Verb [Said to] according to the Sentence of Reported Speech.
If in the Reported Speech Joy is expressed with the words Hurrah etc we change the reporting verb [Said To] into Exclaimed With Joy or Exclaimed With Delight.
Example:- They said,”Hurrah ! we have won the match.”
They exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.
If in the Reported Speech Sorrow is expressed with the words Alas etc we change the reporting verb [Said To] into Exclaimed With Sorrow or Exclaimed With Grief.
Example:- The businessman said,”Alas ! I am ruined.”
The businessman exclaimed with sorrow that he was ruined.
If in the Reported Speech someone has been Praised with the words Bravo etc we change the reporting verb [Said To] into Applauded + Object of Reporting Clause + Saying.
Example:- His father said to Alan,”Bravo ! you have done well.”
His father applauded Alan saying that he had done well.
When the Exclamatory Sentence is started with How or What we change Reporting Verb [Said] into Exclaimed and we replace How and What with Very and Great and make the sentence Assertive.
If there is a Noun after What and How we change it with Great.
Example:- The girl said,”What a fool I am !”
The girl exclaimed that she was a great fool.
If there is an Adjective after What and How we change it with Very.
Example:- She said,”How beautiful the flower is !”
She exclaimed that the flower was very beautiful.
We remove Interjections[Hurrah,Alas,Bravo etc].
Example:- He said to me,”Alas ! my friend is ill.”
He exclaimed with sorrow that his friend was ill.
We use Conjunction That.
Example:- He said to me,”Alas ! my friend is ill.”
He exclaimed with sorrow that his friend was ill.
We remove the Note of Exclamation [!] and write Full Stop [.] at the end of the sentence. It means we change the Exclamatory Sentence into Assertive Sentence.

He exclaimed with sorrow that his friend was ill.
