Active Voice And Passive Voice: Present Indefinite Tense

Let’s learn voices in English Grammar.

Passive voice means that a subject is a recipient of a verb’s action. You may have learned that the passive voice is weak and incorrect, but it isn’t that simple. When used correctly and in moderation, the passive voice is fine.

In English grammar, verbs have five properties: voice, mood, tense, person, and number; here, we are concerned with voice. The two grammatical voices are active and passive.

Passive Voice: Affirmative-

Object+Is/Am/Are+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

Examples-

  1. He plays cricket.[Active voice.]
  • Cricket is played by him.[Passive voice.]

While transferring a sentence into passive voice from active voice –

  • We exchange Subjects and Objects with each other .
  • We use Is/Am/Are as a helping verb in the present indefinite tense and third form of verb.
  • We use preposition By before Subject.[Subject of Active Voice.]

Passive Voice: Negative Sentence

Object+Is/Am/Are+Not+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. He does not play cricket.[Active voice.]
  • Cricket is not played by him.[Passive voice.]

Passive Voice: Interrogative Sentence

Is/Am/Are+Object+Not+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. Does he not play cricket?[Active voice.]
  • Is cricket not played by him?[Passive voice.]

Passive Voice: Main Interrogative Sentence.

Question Word+Is/Am/Are+Object+Not+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

  1. Why does he not play cricket?[Active voice.]
  • Why is cricket not played by him?[Passive voice.]
  • If there is Who as a question word then-

By+Whom+Is/Am/Are+Object+Verb{3rd form of the verb}

  1. Who plays cricket?
  • By whom is cricket played?

Transform the following sentences into passive voice.

  1. Hari teaches Hindi.
  2. They believe me.
  3. He calls you.
  4. The boy read many books.
  5. The boy helps us.
  6. He does not play cricket daily.
  7. You do not like mango.
  8. They do not sell all the fruits.
  9. We do not know him.
  10. The police do not catch the thieves.
  11. Does Mohan read the newspaper daily?
  12. Do you like him?
  13. Does their answer surprise you?
  14. Does Mr.Sharma not know my father very well?
  15. Do you play many games daily?
  16. Why do you not like this game?
  17. Who tells a lie?
  18. Which books does your brother read at this time?
  19. How many boys do not play hockey?
  20. How does she solve all the questions so easily?

Convert from Passive voice to Active voice.

We can transform a sentence from passive voice to active voice by just applying the below rules-

  • We exchange Subject and Object from each other .
  • If there is Is/Am/Are as a helping verb we use the verb according to the Present Indefinite Tense.
  • We remove preposition By before Subject.

Examples-

Affirmative

  1. A story is told by the grandmother.[Passive Voice]
  • The grandmother tells a story.[Active Voice]

Negative-

  1. A story is not told by the grandmother.[Passive Voice]
  • The grandmother does not tell a story.[Active Voice]

Interrogative-

  1. Is a story told by the grandmother?[Passive Voice]
  • Does the grandmother not tell a story?[Active Voice]

Main Interrogative-

  1. Why is a story not told by the grandmother?[Passive Voice]
  • Why does  the grandmother not tell a story?[Active Voice]

Transform the following sentences into active voice.

  1. Flower is plucked by the gardener.
  2. They are called by their old friends.
  3. English is taught to us by Mr.Mehta.
  4. I am helped by my brother.
  5. The book is read by my father.
  6. The song is not sung by the students.
  7. Boys are not beaten by the teacher.
  8. The bell is not rung by the peon.
  9. I am not liked by him.
  10. Hindi is not spoken by my younger son. 
  11. Are apples plucked from your garden by your father?
  12. Is the question solved by the children?
  13. Am I not invited by them?
  14. Are the books not sold here by you?
  15. Is the flag not unfurled by our principal?
  16. By whom is this book read?
  17. When am I taught grammar by you?
  18. By whom are they taught physics?
  19. Which book is bought by your elder brother?
  20. How many questions are solved by this child?
