Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense

The present progressive tense is used to express something that is going on at the time of speaking.

Use Of Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense 

We use  Present Progressive (Continuous) Tense-

1.To emphasise something that is happening in the present and is continuing for an indefinite period of time. 

Example-

  1. My friend is spending his holidays with his family. 

2.To talk about events that have been planned or arranged to take place in the future. 

Example-

  1. My old friend is leaving for America next week. 

3.To indicate a progressive change that is happening. 

Example-

  1. They are trying to make their society more civilized. 

4.To denote actions that occur frequently. 

Example

  1. We are always missing school days. 

5.To indicate habitual actions that are new or specify or temporary. 

  1. I am sleeping late at night during exams. 

Affirmative Sentence

Subject+Is/Am/Are+Verb+ing+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-He is writing a letter. 

वह पत्र लिख रहा है ।

Example.2:-They are going to America. 

Example.3:- I am driving my car. 

Note. We use IS with singular nouns.(see example No.1)

ARE is used with Plural Nouns.(see example No.2) 

With I we use AM.(see example No.3)

Negative Sentence

Subject+Is/Am/Are+Not+Verb+ing+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-He is not writing a letter. 

Example.2:-They are not going to America. 

वह अमेरिकानहीं जा रहे हैं

Example.3:- I am not driving my car. 

Interrogative Sentence

Is/Am/Are+Subject+Not+Verb+ing+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-Is he not writing a letter? 

Example.2:-Are they going to America? 

क्या वह अमेरिका जा रहे हैं?

Example.3:- Am I driving my car? 

Main Interrogative Sentence

Question Word+Is/Am/Are+Subject+Not+Verb+ing+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-When is he writing a letter? 

Example.2:-Why are they going to America? 

वे अमेरिका क्यूँ जा रहे हैं?

Example.3:- Where am I driving my car? 

Story Comprehension: Read Carefully

Now Priya is in her house. She is sitting on a wooden chair. She is holding a coat. She is fixing it. Ivan is Priya’s husband. He is sitting in front of her. He is fixing clothes too. Purvi is sitting next to Ivan. She is Priya’s sister. Right now she is helping Priya and Ivan. They are working together. They are fixing clothes. At this moment a man is coming in. He is wearing dark clothes. He is carrying a pile of clothes. They are all working very hard.

Right now, it is Monday morning. Samar and Siya are at home. They are sitting at a table. They are eating breakfast.

At this moment, Siya is drinking coffee. She is eating a pastry. She is sitting across the table from Samar. She is talking to Samar.

Samar is Siya’s husband. He is sitting at the table with Siya. He is also drinking coffee. Samar is listening to Siya.

After breakfast, Samar and Siya are leaving for work. They work in the city. They are riding the bus to work.

Exercise -3 : Read the following story carefully and frame questions and answers

Now the children are at school. Shilpi is sewing. She is practising. She is sitting on a bench. She is sitting near Raghav.

Raghav is at school too. Raghav is studying. He is sitting behind his desk. He wishes he could play with the other children.

Rohan and Shushant are also at school. They are playing outside. They are picking flowers for their teacher. Rohan is carrying his hat. Shushant is wearing a bonnet.

At this moment, Sarah is walking by the door. She is helping the teacher. She is carrying textbooks to the shelf.

Story for reading comprehension

Title: A Day at the Beach

It is a beautiful summer day, and the sun is shining brightly in the sky. John and his family are spending the day at the beach. They are all wearing swimsuits and carrying beach towels and umbrellas.

John’s younger brother, Tom, is building a sandcastle near the water’s edge. He is using a plastic bucket and a shovel to create the castle’s turrets and walls.

Meanwhile, John and his dad are playing catch with a frisbee. They are both laughing and shouting as they throw the frisbee back and forth.

John’s mom is lying on a beach towel under a nearby umbrella. She is reading a book and occasionally sipping from a cold drink.

As the day goes on, more and more people arrive at the beach. Some are swimming in the water, while others are playing volleyball or tossing a frisbee like John and his dad.

As the sun begins to set, John’s family packs up their things and heads back to their car. They are tired but happy after a fun day at the beach.

Title: Waiting for the Bus

It is a busy morning at the bus stop. Sarah is standing with a group of other commuters, checking her watch and looking impatient. She is wearing a business suit and holding a briefcase.

As she waits for the bus, Sarah checks her phone for messages and emails. She sees a notification from her boss about an important meeting later that day, and she quickly responds to confirm her attendance.

The bus finally arrives, and Sarah gets on with the rest of the commuters. She finds a seat near the back and pulls out her laptop to work on some last-minute preparations for the meeting.

As the bus makes its way through the city streets, Sarah types furiously on her laptop, occasionally glancing up to see if they are getting closer to her stop.

Finally, the bus arrives at Sarah’s stop, and she gathers her things and heads out to the sidewalk. She checks her watch again and realizes that she has only a few minutes to get to the meeting. She hurries down the street, her mind racing with thoughts of the presentation she is about to give.

Most common Expressions used in day-to-day conversation

Affirmative:
