Kinds of Sentences in English

On the basis of different senses and nature there are five kinds of sentences.

  1. Assertive or Declarative Sentence.
  2. Interrogative Sentence.
  3. Imperative Sentence.
  4. Exclamatory Sentence.
  5. Optative Sentence.

Assertive or Declarative Sentence-

The sentence which declares or asserts a statement, feeling, opinion, incident, event, history, or anything is called an assertive sentence. Assertive Sentence is divided into two parts-

  1. Affirmative Sentence=>A sentence that affirms [rather than negates] a proposition.

Examples:-

  1. My father reads the newspaper.
  2. You go to school.
  3. They play hockey.
  1. Negative Sentence:A negative sentence states that something is not true or incorrect.

Examples:-

  1. He does not read English.
  2. They do not believe us.
  3. He does not drink coffee.

Interrogative Sentence

Interrogative Sentence is a sentence that asks a question ,in the last of interrogative sentences there is a question mark.We can divide it into two parts.

Simple Interrogative Sentence:-its answer can be given only in Yes or No.

Examples:- 

  1. Do you play hockey?
  2. Do they go to school daily?
  3. Do I not know him?

Main Interrogative Sentence:Its answer can not be given into Yes or No.

Example:-

  1. Why does he not go with you?
  2. Where does Mr.Sharma live?
  3. How do they play?

Imperative Sentence

An imperative sentence is a type of sentence that gives instructions or advice and expresses a command, an order, a direction, or a request.

Examples:-

  1. Please give me water.[Request]
  2. Bring your homework.[Order]
  3. Take the medicine daily.[Advice]
  4. Let us play cricket.[suggestion]

Exclamatory Sentence

In an exclamatory sentence sense of Surprise, Happiness,Sadness etc are expressed.In the exclamatory sentence there is a mark of exclamation.[!]

Examples:-

  1. How beautiful the flower is!
  2. Alas ! the old man has died.
  3. Hurrah ! we have won the match.

Optative Sentence

The sentence which expresses a prayer, keen wish, curse, etc. is called an optative sentence. This kind of sentence generally starts with ‘may’ and ‘wish’. Sometimes, ‘may’ remains hidden

Examples:-

  1. May you live long !
  2. May they all go to hell !
  3. May they reach safely.

  3. Do you like mango?
  4. Learn this lesson just now.
  5. How long the tree was !
  6. May the king live long !
  7. She helps her mother.
  8. They can not solve this question.
  9. Who will win the final?
  10. How can I write a letter?
  11. Stand up.
  12. How fast the boy is running !
  13. May you get your goal as soon as possible !
  14. What a fall?
  15. The teacher is teaching them physics.
  16. May you have all the happiness of the world !
  17. Please help the needy people.
  18. They should not leave their friend in such a condition.
  19. How will she reach there alone?
  20. Most of Indian people like to speak Hindi.
  21. They are not about to leave this city forever.
  22. Do you not go to your village on holidays?
  23. The lion is called the king of the forest.
