IELTS Questions for Speaking Skills: Opinion on Opposite Ideas

Instructions for Conducting the Activity

  1. Divide students into pairs: Each student should have a learning partner for this activity.
  2. Distribute questions: Hand out or display a list of questions that will be used during the activity.
  3. Explain the process
  • One student from each pair will start by reading the first question aloud.
  • Their partner will respond to the question in a way that they feel is suitable, providing a clear and thoughtful answer.
  • After the answer, switch roles so the other student asks the next question, and their partner responds.
  1. Encourage natural conversation: Remind students to listen carefully to their partner’s answers and ask follow-up questions if needed to encourage a more in-depth discussion.
  2. Monitor the activity: Walk around the room and observe the conversations. Offer guidance if students seem stuck or need help expanding their answers.
  3. Switch questions: After a few minutes, ask the pairs to move on to a new question from the list.

Opinions on Opposite Ideas

1. Do you think it’s better to plan things out or to be spontaneous?

In my opinion, it’s better to plan things out, especially for important tasks or long-term goals. Planning helps ensure that everything is organized and reduces the risk of overlooking key details. It also allows people to manage their time more effectively and anticipate potential challenges. However, being spontaneous can also be beneficial in certain situations, particularly when flexibility is needed. Overall, while I prefer planning, I believe a balance between both approaches is ideal.

2.Is it more important to work hard or to be lucky in life?

I believe hard work is far more important than luck when it comes to achieving success. Hard work allows you to develop skills, gain experience, and create opportunities for yourself. While luck can play a role in certain situations, relying on it is not a sustainable way to succeed. Luck might give you a head start, but without hard work, it’s difficult to maintain success. In the long run, I think dedication and perseverance matter the most.

3. Do you think traditional books will be replaced by e-books in the future?

While e-books have gained immense popularity due to their convenience, I don’t think traditional books will be entirely replaced. Many people, including myself, still prefer the tactile experience of reading a physical book. There’s a certain nostalgia and comfort associated with traditional books that e-books can’t replicate. That being said, e-books will continue to grow in popularity, especially due to their portability and eco-friendliness. I believe both formats will coexist in the future, catering to different preferences.

4. Is it better to live in the city or the countryside?

Both the city and the countryside have their advantages, but I personally believe it’s better to live in the city. Cities offer more opportunities in terms of employment, education, and cultural activities. The infrastructure is usually better, and access to healthcare and public services is more convenient. However, the countryside provides a peaceful and relaxed environment, which is great for those who prefer a slower pace of life. Ultimately, it depends on one’s lifestyle preferences, but I lean toward city living due to its dynamic nature.

5. Do you believe it’s more beneficial to travel alone or with a group?

I think both solo travel and group travel have their merits, but I find solo travel more beneficial. When you travel alone, you have the freedom to make your own schedule, explore at your own pace, and reflect on the experience in a more personal way. It also pushes you out of your comfort zone and encourages self-reliance. On the other hand, traveling with a group can be enjoyable because of the shared experiences and companionship. However, I prefer the independence that comes with solo travel.

6. Is formal education or self-learning more valuable for success?

Both formal education and self-learning are valuable, but I believe self-learning is slightly more important in today’s world. Formal education provides a foundation of knowledge and skills, but self-learning allows individuals to go beyond traditional curricula and develop expertise in specific areas of interest. With the vast amount of information available online, anyone can learn almost anything on their own. Self-motivation and the ability to learn independently are key to staying relevant in a rapidly changing world. However, a combination of both is ideal for success.

7. Do you think people should save money or spend it freely?

I believe people should strike a balance between saving money and spending it. While saving is essential for financial security, especially in emergencies or for future goals like retirement, it’s also important to enjoy life in the present. Spending money on experiences, such as travel or hobbies, can bring happiness and fulfillment. However, spending recklessly without consideration for long-term financial stability can lead to problems. Therefore, I think it’s crucial to save wisely while also allowing yourself to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

8. Should people rely on their instincts or make decisions based on logic?

I think people should primarily rely on logic when making important decisions, as it helps ensure that choices are well thought out and based on facts. Logical thinking allows for careful consideration of the consequences and leads to more rational outcomes. That said, instincts can be valuable, especially in situations where there isn’t enough time to analyze everything thoroughly. Our instincts often come from past experiences and subconscious knowledge. A combination of logic and intuition often leads to the best decisions.

9. Is social media beneficial for society, or does it cause more harm?

Social media has both benefits and drawbacks, but I believe it causes more harm than good. On the one hand, social media allows people to connect globally, share ideas, and stay informed. However, it also contributes to problems such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and the spread of toxic comparison culture. Many people, especially younger generations, suffer from anxiety and low self-esteem due to unrealistic portrayals of life on social platforms. While it has its advantages, I think the negative effects outweigh the positives in many cases.

10. Is it better to prioritize personal happiness or societal expectations?

I believe it’s more important to prioritize personal happiness over societal expectations. Everyone’s path in life is different, and pursuing what makes you genuinely happy leads to a more fulfilling life. Following societal expectations may bring approval from others, but it often comes at the cost of individual satisfaction. Of course, it’s important to maintain a balance and consider how your actions affect others, but ultimately, living in alignment with your values and desires should take precedence over trying to meet external expectations.
