Passive voice means that a subject is a recipient of a verb’s action. You may have learned that the passive voice is weak and incorrect, but it isn’t that simple. When used correctly and in moderation, the passive voice is fine.

In English grammar, verbs have five properties: voice, mood, tense, person, and number; here, we are concerned with voice. The two grammatical voices are active and passive.

Some basic rules to transform a sentence from Active Voice into Passive Voice.

Affirmative Sentence

Object+Is/Am/Are+Being+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

Examples-

  1. He is reading my book.[Active voice.]
  • My book is being read by him.[passive voice.]

While transferring a sentence into passive voice from active voice –

  • We exchange Subject and Object from each other .
  • We use Is/Am/Are + Being as a helping verb in the present continuous tense and third form of verb.
  • We use preposition By before Subject.[Subject of Active Voice]

Negative Sentence

Object+Is/Am/Are+Not+Being+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. He is not reading my book.[Active voice.]
  • My book is not being read by him.[passive voice.]

Interrogative Sentence

Is/Am/Are+Object+Not+Being+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. Is he not reading my book?[Active voice.]
  • Is my book not being read by him?[passive voice.]

Main Interrogative Sentence

Question Word+Is/Am/Are+Object+Not+Being+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

  1. Why is he not reading my book?[Active voice.]
  • Why is my book not being read by him?[passive voice.]
  • If there is Who as a question word then-

By+Whom+Is/Am/Are+Object+Not+Being+Verb{3rd form of the verb}

  1. Who is reading my book?
  • By whom is my book being read?

Transform the following sentences into Passive Voice.

  1. The children are playing cricket in the field.
  2. I am knowing your friend very well.
  3. They are bringing some food for the poor people.
  4. The teacher is teaching us grammar today.
  5. The sun is giving us light and heat.
  6. He is not buying any new car.
  7. Rama is not playing chess with his friends in his room.
  8. The people are not helping each other nowadays.
  9. No one is reading psychology in this college.
  10. We are not eating ice cream with our friends.
  11. Are they not believing us?
  12. Am I knowing you?
  13. Is he giving a new book to his brother?
  14. Are you not telling the story to the children?
  15. Is he not calling you?
  16. Why are you not learning your lesson?
  17. Who is killing the animals?
  18. When is the government giving free grain to the poor people?
  19. Who is making him angry?
  20. How many children are participating in the program?

From passive voice to active voice.

We can transform a sentence from passive voice to active voice by just applying the below rules-

  • We exchange Subject and Object from each other .
  • If there is Is/Am/Are + Being as a helping verb we use the verb according to the present continuous tense.
  • We remove preposition By before Subject.

Examples-

Affirmative-

  1. A story is being told by the grandmother.[Passive Voice]
  • The grandmother is telling a story.[Active Voice]

Negative-

  1. A story is not being told by the grandmother.[Passive Voice]
  • The grandmother is not telling a story.[Active Voice]

Interrogative-

  1. Is a story being told by the grandmother.[Passive Voice]
  • Is the grandmother telling a story?[Active Voice]

Main Interrogative-

  1. Why is a story not being told by the grandmother?[Passive Voice]
  • Why is the grandmother not telling a story?[Active Voice]

Transform the following sentences into Active Voice.

  1. The flower is being plucked by the children.
  2. The man is being helped by your father.
  3. The son is being beaten by his father.
  4. The people are being summoned by the speaker.
  5. The child is given milk by him daily.
  6. The letter is not being written by the small boys.
  7. The fish are not being eaten by us.
  8. We are not being invited to dinner by them.
  9. Truth is not spoken here by anyone.
  10. The case is not being heard by the judge now.
  11. Is the tree not being cut rapidly in the city by the builders?
  12. Is the money not being given to your younger brother by your father?
  13. Is pollution not being increased by the factories?
  14. Is the water not being wasted by you?
  15. Are you not being sent to Bangalore for the job by this company?
  16.  Why is the population not being controlled?
  17. By whom are you not being called?
  18. By how many students is science being read?
  19. By whom are you being known here?
  20. Why are the listeners not being charmed by her sweet voice?
