Hi there,

Today, I have brought a very essential part of English grammar i.e Tense (simple Present). I ensure you after reading this post you will be able to comprehend any story or text written in the present indefinite tense.

In this post, I have mentioned examples, illustrations, structures, Q&A comprehension, and some daily used expressions which are essential to know the beginners.

We use the simple present tense to indicate the present time, refer to actions and events that are going on not only at the time of speaking but will also continue in the future.

We use it to indicate the facts,customs,habits and abilities etc. 

Example.1:- A magnet attracts iron filings.[Facts]

Example.2:- Dog barks at the strangers.[Habit]

Example.3:- My brother plays football very well.[Ability]

We use present simple tense after ‘IF’ in likey conditional clauses.

Example.If it rains,I shall not go to school.

We use simple present tense after words like,”when,until,before,after,as soon as.”

Example.When the rain stops,we will play cricket.

Example.2:- I can not go until my father comes.

Example.3:- We shall go in the class as soon as the bell rings.

Present Indefinite; Affirmative Sentence

Affirmative sentence.

subject+verb+S/ES+object+place+time.

Example.1:- He goes to school daily.

Example.2:- I read the newspaper.

Example.3:- You play hockey very well.

Example.4:- They read grammar.

We use S/ES with singular nouns.[Example NO.1]

With plural nouns and with I and YOU we do not use S/ES.[Example NO.2,3,4]

Negative Sentence; Present Indefinite

Negative sentence.

Subject+Do/Does+Not+Verb+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-He does not go to school.

Example.2:- I do not read the newspaper.

Example.3:- You do not play hockey very well.

Example.4:- They do not read grammar.

We use DO/DOES with singular nouns.[Example NO.1]

With plural nouns and with I and YOU we do not use DOES.[Example NO.2,3,4]

Yes/No Interrogative; Present Indefinite Tense

Interrogative sentence

Do/Does+Subject+Not+Verb+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-Does he not go to school?

Example.2:- Do I not read the newspaper?

Example.3:- Do you not play hockey very well?

Example.4:- Do they not read grammar?

Main Interrogative Sentence; Present Indefinite Tense

Main Interrogative sentence.

Question Word+Do/Does+Subject+Not+Verb+Object+Place+Time.

Example.1:-Why does he not go to school?

Example.2:-When  do I not read the newspaper?

Example.3:-Where do you play hockey?

Example.4:-When do they read grammar?

 Story Passage; Present Indefinite

Tom is a cowboy. He lives on a farm. He has a horse named Champ. Tom Loves Champ. He rides Champ every day. Sometimes they walk slowly, and sometimes they run fast. They always have a good time.

Champ is Tom’s horse. She is white. Her tail and mane are dark. She is three years old. She lives in the stable by the house.

Champ waits for Tom every morning. They enjoy their time together. Often, Tom gives her apples after long rides. Tom always washes and brushes Champ. He usually brushes her tail. Then he gives her food and fresh water. Champ loves Tom.

I wake up early every morning and stretch my arms and legs. Then, I brush my teeth and wash my face. I usually make myself a cup of coffee and sit down at the kitchen table to plan my day. I work from home, so I spend most of my day sitting at my desk in front of my computer. I take short breaks every now and then to stretch my legs and get some fresh air. In the evenings, I usually go for a walk or run to get some exercise. I like to cook dinner for myself and watch a movie or read a book before going to bed.
