Passive voice means that a subject is a recipient of a verb’s action. You may have learned that the passive voice is weak and incorrect, but it isn’t that simple. When used correctly and in moderation, the passive voice is fine. In English grammar, verbs have five properties: voice, mood, tense, person, and number; here, we are concerned with voice. The two grammatical voices are active and passive.

Affirmative Sentence

Object+Will/Shall+Be+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

Examples-

  1. The police will catch the thief.[Active voice.]
  • The thief will be caught by the police.[passive voice.]

While transferring a sentence into passive voice from active voice –

  • We exchange Subjects and Objects from each other.
  • We use Will/Shall + Be as a helping verb in the Future IndefiniteTense and third form of the verb.
  • We use the preposition By before Subject.[Subject of Active Voice.]

Negative Sentence

Object+Will/Shall+Not+Be+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. The police will not catch the thief.[Active voice.]
  • The thief will not be caught by the police.[passive voice.]

Interrogative Sentence.

Will/Shall+Object+Not+Be+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject

  1. Will the police catch the thief?[Active voice.]
  • Will the thief be caught by the police?[passive voice.]

Main Interrogative Sentence.

Question Word+Will/Shall+Object+Not+Be+Verb{3rd form of the verb}+By+Subject.

  1. Why will the police not catch the thief?[Active voice.]
  • Why will the thief not be caught by the police?[passive voice.]
  • If there is Who as a question word then-

By+Whom+Will/Shall+Object+Not+Be+Verb{3rd form of the verb}

  1. Who will not catch the thief?
  • By whom will the thief not be caught?

Transform the following sentences into passive voice.

  1. Mumbai Indian will win the IPL.
  2. They will help me tomorrow.
  3. My father will buy a costly watch for me.
  4. The lazy people will never do this work.
  5. Your work will satisfy the new manager.
  6. The teacher will not allow the late coming students.
  7. He will not like the coffee of this cafe.
  8. They will not call us.
  9. The principal will not punish me.
  10. Her song will not charm all the audience.
  11. Will he not write a letter to his father?
  12. Will the king kill the lion?
  13. Will Mr.Mehta help his neighbors?
  14. Will your friends celebrate your birthday?
  15. Will he not know your family?
  16. Who will eat these sour mangoes?
  17. Why will you not learn your lesson?
  18. How shall I solve so many questions?
  19. How many books will they buy for me?
  20. Why will they not call the police?

From passive voice to active voice.

We can transform a sentence from passive voice to active voice by just applying the below rules-

  • We exchange Subject and Object from each other .
  • If there is Will/Shall + Be as a helping verb we use the verb according to the Future Indefinite Tense.
  • We remove preposition By before Subject.

Examples-

Affirmative-

  1. The seed will be eaten by the bird.[Passive Voice]
  • The bird will eat the seed.[Active Voice]

Negative-

  1. The seed will not be eaten by the bird.[Passive Voice]
  • The bird will not eat the seed.[Active Voice]

Interrogative-

  1. Will the seed not be eaten by the bird?[Passive Voice]
  • Will the bird not eat the seed?[Active Voice]

Main Interrogative-

  1. When will the seed be eaten by the bird?[Passive Voice]
  • When will the bird eat the seed?[Active Voice]

Transform the following sentences into active voice.

  1. The toffee will be eaten by the children.
  2. The boy will be given a pen by the teacher.
  3. I shall be taught grammar by him.
  4. The flower will be plucked by the gardener.
  5. They will be surprised at your reply.
  6. Mohan will not be called by Sohan.
  7. No story will be told by the grandmother.
  8. His car will not be sold by him.
  9. We shall not be told to wait by them.
  10. The guests will be displeased at her rude behaviour.
  11. Will the gold watch not be sold by the goldsmith?
  12. Shall I be called by all of you?
  13. Will new books not  be bought by Gupta?
  14. Will the goat not be killed by the lion?
  15. Will his teachers not be disappointed at his failure?
  16. Why will the letter not be posted by you tomorrow?
  17. When will the blanket be divided among the beggars by the government?
  18. By whom will the children be beaten daily?
  19. How many bananas will be eaten by the monkey?
  20. How shall I be known to the principal?
